Can it get weirder than this – having coffee with the owls in the centre of the city in broad daylight!! Yes, of course!! But only if you are in Japan!! Owls have gained widespread popularity with the success of the Harry Potter franchise and so on the weekend we went to Owl Family in Tenjinbashi Osaka for some evening cuppa with the owls!! Owl cafes or fukuro cafes フクロウカフェ are the latest in Japan news..after cat/dog/penguin/rabbit and maid cafes. As soon as we entered we were asked to order our drinks and clean our hands with sanitiser. We were given instructions on how to hold or touch the owls and then we were led to spend some time with 6-7 owls whereas around 10 of them were fast asleep. We could pet the owls, take pictures with them and even perch an owl on our shoulder or head. Well I didn’t perch them on my head as I saw some owls pooping on other people!! When holding an owl, we had to hold the tether tightly because if they get irritated, they try to fly away and may smack into a wall or get eaten by another owl!! We could stay there for an hour stroking them and just hanging out with them!!
It was strange though when the owls looked directly into my eyes…It’s kind of sad to see that owls are made to stay awake during the day even though they are nocturnal animals. But I have to admit it was one of the quirkiest places I have ever visited. Visiting an owl cafe is definitely the weirdest and the most fun thing to do in Japan!!
