The afternoon tea culture is really booming in Tokyo. Afternoon tea sets are offered by many luxury hotels, as well as some restaurants and cafes. If you know me or follow my blog, you would have realized by now that I am an afternoon tea addict and it is my goal to cover all the afternoon tea spots in Tokyo! In my afternoon tea hunt I visited this Valentine special afternoon tea at Shangri-La Tokyo in February.

Shangri-La Hotel is located close to Nihonbashi exit of Tokyo station and it’s in Marunouchi Trust Tower Main Building. We stayed in Shangri-la a few years ago and I love the vibe of Marunouchi area. The afternoon tea at Shangri-la Tokyo is held at The Lobby Lounge on the 28th floor. Complete with live piano music, large windows, sprawling sofas – the atmosphere at this restaurant is really chic and charming.

Our reservation was at 1 PM, but we were there about ten minutes before of time, however, we were given our table. The sitting area is spacious and relaxing, very unique for Tokyo. The view is nice but nothing great – just some tall buildings and streets. I think other hotels in Tokyo have a better view.

We went for Valentine’s special afternoon tea and we were given a glass of champagne as welcome drink and gift box of chocolates. We could choose from a variety of teas ranging from black to herbal and green teas. And just to let you know, you can drink as many tea as you want!

The afternoon tea set consists of two multi-tiered serving platters packed with finger sandwiches, cakes, and muffins. They offer three kinds of scones: plain, chocolate chip and strawberry. It was served with homemade strawberry jam, passion fruit cream, clotted cream, and acacia honey. For sweets we got raspberry macaroon, fraise des bois mousse, raspberry tart and cupcakes. There were three types of sandwiches and an orange-flavoured foie gras mousse puff kind of thing.

As for food, I think it was rather a hit or miss. They looked good and tasted all right, however, I didn’t think that any item was extraordinary. Most items were quite average and didn’t live up to the standards of a five-star hotel.

The Valentine Special afternoon tea set was for 4900 yen per person (excluding tax and 15% service charge). I think I have had better afternoon tea in Tokyo in lesser price. I also didn’t like that we had a 2-hour time restriction as we felt a bit rushed. Towards the end, I had to stuff my café latte as they implied that we need to leave.

I feel that Tokyo has many more better places for afternoon tea like here, here or here, so I might not go to Shangri-La Tokyo again!
