The Body Shop ザ・ボディショップ website says, “Cleanse and nourish your skin with our rich cleansing butter. A luxurious way to remove every last trace of make-up, while purifying, cleansing and refreshing your skin, leaving it soft to the touch.

  • Suitable for sensitive skin and contact lens wearers
  • Camomile extract from Norfolk, England
  • Clean and silky-soft feel
  • Removes all types of make-up

The Body Shop’s Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter does the job of a first cleanse perfectly. It’s one of their best sellers, and it’s easy to see why. It is a perfect, somewhat pocket-friendly first cleanse that effortlessly removes stubborn, long-lasting makeup without being harsh on your skin. Camomile has been proven to be highly effective for soothing and calming the skin with its anti-irritant properties, yet it is still gentle enough for sensitive skin.

How to use

Apply to dry face and massage into skin. Rinse off with warm water or remove with a wet muslin cloth for a more thorough cleanse. I apply it directly to my dry face and use my clean hands to melt it and work it in, then remove it with cotton pads. This is very easy to do since the product breaks down almost instantly once you start working it in, and it truly becomes a silky oil that is very easy to spread across the skin. It melts off all my makeup, even the stubborn waterproof makeup, glitter, gel liner etc. without leaving skin thirsty and dry.

Smell

The smell is very light, fresh, and soothing. Overall, it’s a soft and mild floral scent of chamomile flower.

Texture

The texture of the product is like a silky smooth whipped ultra moisturizing balm. You only need a small amount to get a good clean in, so it lasts a long time. It is pretty solid in the container, but the moment you start to work it in and it comes in contact with the heat of your skin, it quickly melts into a silky oil.

Packaging

It comes in a flat, screw-top tin, which isn’t user-friendly in the shower but great for traveling as it doesn’t take up much space.

Price

2300 Yen for a tin of 90 ml

Final thoughts

This product rinses easily, however, it leaves a thin-film that stays behind on the skin. I have to follow it with a second cleansing with a traditional facial wash. Since it’s quite oily, it won’t strip oils from your skin while double cleansing. My skin is left very soft and clean but not dry at all. I do use a micellar water after this product to remove a bit of the residue that’s left. But if you have dry skin, you may enjoy the film that’s left behind. The only negative I can think is that sometimes this balm can’t remove very stubborn mascaras, there are always traces remaining.

I’ve tried many balms, wipes, and other products to remove makeup over the last few years and this is one of the bests on smell, texture, and ability to remove make-up. I’ve repurchased this a few times and will continue to do so. You can also buy it, here.
